IEI Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Illinois Engineering Initiative
Introduction
Illinois produces a large number of engineering graduates, many of whom leave the state after finishing their education. Although the state hosts some of the world’s leading engineering programs, it struggles to retain that workforce even as demand for engineers in Illinois is expected to increase due to upcoming retirements. The IEI Scholarship aims to help close this talent gap by supporting efforts to develop and keep engineering professionals in Illinois.
Goals
- Encourage and support emerging engineers.
- Assist Illinois employers in attracting and keeping engineering talent.
- Equip rising engineering leaders with the skills and resources needed for professional growth.
- Reach out to and create opportunities for communities underrepresented in engineering.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be enrolled at an Illinois university.
- Have at least junior academic standing.
- Be enrolled in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Note: students in engineering technology programs are not eligible.
- Maintain a B average or higher in courses that count toward the ABET-accredited engineering degree.
- Demonstrate financial need.
Required application materials
In addition to the completed application form and needs analysis, candidates must submit:
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (sent under separate cover).
- Two letters of reference — one from the department chair or a department faculty member and the second from a past employer or another character reference.
- A typewritten essay of 200 words or fewer describing your career goals as a professional engineer.
Make sure all items are included to be considered for the IEI Scholarship.
