Los Angeles County is home to more than 30,000 children and young people in foster care, many of whom face barriers to stable resources, education, and mentoring relationships. The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation (BMCF) is committed to helping these youth build brighter futures.
BMCF began in 2013 as a ministry of First AME Church in Los Angeles and now operates as an independent nonprofit focused on serving current and former foster youth. The foundation honors the legacy of Biddy Mason — a woman who was once enslaved, won her freedom in Los Angeles, and spent her life supporting and uplifting others.
Since 2018, the foundation has awarded scholarships to support foster youth pursuing academic and career goals. With only about 3% of foster youth earning college degrees, these scholarships — made possible by generous donors — have helped hundreds of determined students across Los Angeles County take important steps toward higher education and professional growth.
Eligibility
- Must be a current or former dependent (foster youth) of Los Angeles County
- Must be enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited educational program: secondary school, vocational/trade school, community college, or a four-year college or university
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
How to apply
- Submit the online application form
- Attach your most recent academic transcript from your current or most recent school
- Provide verification of current or former foster youth status through DCFS documentation
- Include a personal statement of approximately 500 words
