The objective of the Southern California Member Chapter scholarships is to reward and encourage an AIST Southern California Member Chapter high school senior or college undergraduate student, by providing a grant of financial support during attendance full or part time at any accredited university or college. There are two scholarships – AIST Member Scholarship and the Engineering Scholarship.

Eligibility

The Member Scholarship will be awarded to a member or the child, grandchild, niece, nephew or spouse of an active AIST Southern California Chapter member, or AIST student member through the Material Advantage Student Program attending a university in or living in the area of the chapter.  The student must be accepted in an eligible full or part time course of study at an accredited university or college.

The Engineering Scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a career in engineering, the sciences or other majors relating to iron and steel production. The Engineering Scholarship is for, children, stepchildren, grandchildren or spouses of an active Southern California Chapter members, or AIST student member through the Material Advantage Student Program, attending a university in, or living in, the area of the chapter. The student must be accepted in an eligible full or part time course of study at an accredited university or college.

Selection

Applications for the scholarships will be reviewed by the Executive board of the Southern California Chapter. This awards will be made without regard to financial need.

Rules

  1. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university.
  2. The student must start the course of study at the university or college in the fall of the same year that the Scholarship is awarded. The student may be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in an undergraduate program or participating in a graduate program.
  3. If applying for the Engineering Scholarship, student must be enrolled in a field of engineering.
  4. If applying for the Member Scholarship, student must be the child, grandchild, niece, nephew or spouse of an AIST member or an AIST or Material Advantage member his or herself attending a university, or living in, the area of the chapter.
  5. The AIST Foundation will forward the scholarship stipend, as a lump sum, to the college or university for deposit in the account of the student.
  6. In cases where the student’s studies or admission are delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Secretary must be advised immediately, and may result in forfeiture.

Required Documents

1. Scholarship application.

2. Required Essay –

Member Scholarship: Explain in a brief essay (250 words or less) your involvement in high school, college or your professional career and why you should be the recipient of this scholarship.

Engineering Scholarship: Essay should convey a demonstrated interest in the steel industry, your professional goals, and how your skills could be applied to enhance the industry.  

3. A current resume with work experience (focusing specifically on field-related internships or jobs) and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions, other honors and scholarships received.

4. Two (2) recommendation letters from a Counselor, Teacher or Professor must be included with the application.

5. Copy of current high school or college transcripts.
