For the 2025-2026 cycle, four Fellowships, each worth $28,000, will be granted. The funds will cover the regular academic year (fall and spring semesters or the equivalent in universities that operate on a quarterly system). The fellowship office of the recipient's university will handle the disbursement of funds for study in the United States. All studies must be conducted within the United States, and all funds must be spent within the country.
The fellowship lasts for one academic year and cannot be extended or deferred.
The de Karman Fellowships are available to PhD students from any field of study, including international students, who are currently studying at one of the listed California universities. Only those PhD candidates who plan to defend their dissertation around June 2026 are eligible to apply for a 2024-2025 Fellowship.
Undergraduates, master’s degree students, and postdoctoral scholars are not eligible to apply. Applicants from the Humanities will receive special consideration.
Prospective applicants should be aware that the competition for de Karman Fellowships is fierce. To stand a chance, applicants should have excellent letters of recommendation, notable early scholarly contributions, and should have completed a substantial part of their dissertation at the time of application.
